Item description: Rocky Mountain Pipeline Mod. 2000!!!
A piece of mountain bike freeride history is for sale. A rare classic. The former working tool of the original Frorider team around the legends Wade Simmons and Ritchey Schley. A Rocky Mountain Pipeline, complete with adequate equipment and fully functional.
I bought the frame new in 2001 from a Rocky Mountain dealer in southern Germany. The superstructures and components have changed constantly over the years. I rode the bike for its intended purpose between 2001 and 2006. The rear triangle is the revised version from 2002. Unfortunately, the original rear triangle broke in the area of the disc brake mount. However, the original rear triangle is still available if you are interested in it for the sake of completeness. The rear triangle and the way it works are the real special feature of the bike. The single-pivot drive swingarm was an idea long before platform systems in suspension elements to avoid chain tension during compression. The RM Pipeline combines this concept with the idea of variable suspension travel and frame geometry. Using a quick release, the shock linkage can be selected in 3 positions (100, 130, 150 mm travel...and don't ask me about the corresponding steering and seat angles...). Of course, the comparison with modern rear triangles and their performance makes no sense. But then as now, it works perfectly.
The bike stands for the iconic Rocky Mountain look of the early freeride era like no other. CNC milled parts and castings with beautiful welded seams. Handbuilt in Canada!
Of course, I wouldn't advise anyone to ride the bike today as it was intended back then. Signs of use and wear are a matter of course. Unfortunately, the bearings have play and I don't want to invent any fairy tales about the performance of the suspension elements.
Nostalgia and fascination for a milestone in the development of full suspension mountain bikes are the keywords here.
Here are the equipment highlights.
Frame: Rocky Mountain Pipeline Mod. 2000, size 18" with original FOX Vanilla R shock
Fork: Marzocchie Bomber Z1 ETA Mod. 2002 130 mm travel
Wheels: Mavic Deemax (from possibly 2006ish?)
Brakes: Formula Oro with 185mm Avid brake rotors. Brakes are freshly filled and bled, new brake pads and fully functional.
Drivetrain: SRAM X9 9-speed. Schifter with the stylish Matchmaker clamps on the Formula brake levers. Cassette and chain are new. So unfortunately not vintage, but fresh.
Cranks: Race Face Evolve XC with Race Face bottom bracket and Race Face chainrings with Race Face bashring (whoever once threw off the big sprocket and switched to 2x was a wild dog...)
Saddle: unfortunately not quite fresh, but the original Rocky Mountain saddle.
Cockpit: Race Face Diabolo stem, Race Face Thermo SP headset (blue), Syntace handlebars, not quite fresh Race Face grips
Pedals: Shimano Saint
I put it together in the configuration offered here out of lockdown boredom during the pandemic. I'm not going to ride it anymore, unfortunately I don't really have any space and it's far too good to just stand around and rot. I hope it arouses the enthusiasm of an enthusiast. The price is of course negotiable and includes a good portion of emotion and nostalgia. Let's talk about it...!
And that's right, after more than 20 years, the warranty and spare parts supply look bad...
