Written contract when buying or selling a used bike?
For the purchase and sale of a road bike, MTB or E-MTB you do not need a written contract. However, the advantages of a purchase contract for private sales are obvious: If, for example, there is an accusation of bike theft, you have a written contract for the purchase of the bike with all data and addresses. And a written contract of sale also helps the other way around: if your bike is stolen. This way you can easily and quickly prove your ownership - directly with all important key data about the bike.
What are the important things I should consider when selling my used bike?
- Is the wheel clean has no major defects?
- Are tires, chain, gears, headset and brakes in order?
- Are suspension fork and shock (if present) clean and working properly?
- For an eBike: Are the battery, display and other components in order? What is the battery status?
- Go for a short drive and listen carefully. Everything as it should be?
- Take a deposit (e.g. ID card) if there is to be a test drive by interested parties.
What should I pay attention to when buying a used bike from a private seller?
- Look at the bike and the listing carefully before buying. If necessary, print it out for your records or inquiries, or save it.
- Check the bike best on the spot - before payment.
- Is the bike clean and ready to ride?
- Check brakes, gears, tires, cables, headset and possibly suspension for function and visible wear.
- For e-bikes: Take a look at the battery, displays and components - ask about the battery status.
- Do a little test drive (bring your ID as a deposit) and listen carefully.
- Take a friend with you if you need a second opinion or help with the purchase.
- Take your time when buying.
